2. After planning, write a review of the film of at least 750 words (posted on your blog).

You should refer to the best film review sites to help you...

Due: next Monday

Today's lesson

How has Ill Manors used the broadcast platform to generate interest in the film?

Watch the trailer for Ill Manors and answer the following questions on your blog:

  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
  2. How are trailers distributed
  3. How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
  4. Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used?
  5. How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The final question (5) requires you to carry out a detailed analysis like you would for a Section A, Media Forms question so make sure you include specific examples and use correct media terminology.

Finish this for homework if you don't complete it in the lesson - due next Monday.

Important: Year 12 Media students

Two important announcements this week...

Laurie Penny lecture - Tuesday 21 January
Firstly, the school is incredibly lucky to have a high profile guest speaker coming in on Tuesday lunchtime and we are making it compulsory for all A Level Media students to attend.

Laurie Penny is a journalist, feminist and prolific user of new and digital technology to challenge widely held viewpoints in the mainstream media. She will be talking in the lecture theatre at 12.20pm on Tuesday 21 January and will introduce you to two very important Year 13 topics: New and Digital Media and Feminism.

We will be taking a register of all Year 12 Media students so see you there!

GCSE Media coursework support: job opportunity
We are currently recruiting two post-16 Media students to earn a small amount of money helping our GCSE Media students with their coursework. For £5 an hour, we will be running after-school sessions on a Wednesday with post-16 students offering feedback, advice and expertise in getting GCSE coursework to target grade level.

If you're interested, send Mr Halsey a short email explaining why you'd be the right person for the job.

There will be a training session for the successful applicants and then sessions will run for most of the Spring term.

Good luck!

12E Cover Work p5/6 Thur 16/1

12E: This is your last double lesson to research, plan and prepare your shoot in your groups.

Do not leave the classroom. Mr Babu will register and supervise you.

Make sure that the detailed shot list is completed (at least 50+ shots - with a variety of shot types, including close ups) along with the script and storyboard, and that all of these are uploaded onto each group member's individual blog.

Don't forget to do this week's progress report too, including the following...

1. What you achieved individually;
2. What you achieved collaboratively with your group;
3. What Went Well this week (WWW) in terms of meeting goals/making progress;
4. Even Better If (EBI)outlining what could be improved;
5. Action Plan for next week, to include dates/deadlines, details of responsibilities, etc.

Do not waste this time - if you complete the above you could do more research into texts similar to yours (always good to keep getting fresh ideas) practice with the camera equipment, or rehearse some of the scenes you'll be performing.

12E MEST1 exam learner response

The real MEST1 exam is on Friday 23 May - between now and then we need to make sure we do everything we can to maximise our grade - it's 50% of the AS level. Before that, we've got another Section A practice in the February mocks and you should be looking to do at least a grade better than you achieved before Christmas.

Today, type up your feedback to ensure you have a record of it (you don't have to write the mark and grade if you don't want to) and complete the following tasks for your learner response:

1) What three things will you do differently in the February mock exam as a result of your feedback? Explain in detail - imagine you are giving yourself advice in the build-up to the next Media exam you have.

2) What grade are you aiming for in the February mock exam? Justify your answer.

3) What grade are you realistically aiming to achieve in this exam component in MayJustify your answer.
